Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Light green-top (lithium heparin gel) tube or lavender-top (EDTA) tube.

Acceptable: Gold-top serum gel tube, plain red-top tube, lavender-top (EDTA) tube,

                       or Grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube

Specimen Volume: 0.2 mL of plasma or serum

Stability: Separated specimens should be analyzed immediately or kept at 2 – 8°C

                and analyzed within 3 days. For longer storage, samples may be frozen at

                -20 °C for up to 3 months.

Collection Instructions:

Note: 1. A non-alcohol swab (Betadine) must be used to sterilize drawing site.

           2. Patient ingestion of alcohol-containing medicinal liquids (ie, elixirs and

              mouthwashes) may affect result.

Negative

Critical value: >300 mg/dL

Useful For

Ethanol measurements obtained are used in the diagnosis and treatment of ethanol intoxication and poisoning.
