Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube

Acceptable: Gold-top serum gel tube or plain red-top tube

Specimen Volume: 0.1 mL of  plasma or serum

Stability: Specimens may be kept at 2 – 8°C and analyzed within 7 days.  For longer storage,

                 samples may be frozen at -20°C for up to 6 months.

 

Reference Values

8.5-10.1 mg/dL

Critical values

0-7 days: <6.0 mg/dL or >12.0 mg/dL

>7 days: <6.0 mg/dL or >13.0 mg/dL

Useful For

Calcium measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of parathyroid disease, a variety of bone diseases, chronic renal disease, and tetany (intermittent muscular contractions or spasms).
