Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Preferred:

Preserved Stool

Specimens in either sodium acetate formalin (SAF) preservative, Cary Blair, or enteric transport media (ETM) preservative must be kept refrigerated and arrive in laboratory within 4 days of collection.

 

Do not send specimen if antidiarrheal medications, oily laxatives and procedures with barium or bismuth has been given in the past 5 days.

 

1. Submit 2 mL of SAF, Cary Blair, or ETM preserved stool collection system. (Do not contaminate stool specimen with urine.) Only 1 specimen per day will be accepted, unless it is a purged specimen.

2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Note: Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.

 

Alternate:

Fresh Stool

Specimen must be refrigerated and arrive in laboratory within 24 hours of collection. 

 

Do not send specimen if antidiarrheal medications, oily laxatives and procedures with barium or bismuth has been given in the past 5 days.

 

1. Submit 2 mL of freshly passed stool in a screw-capped, sterile container. (Do not contaminate stool specimen with urine.) Only 1 specimen per day will be accepted, unless it is a purged specimen.

2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
