Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred:  Lavender-top (EDTA) tube
Specimen Volume: 2 mL of EDTA whole blood

Stability: Specimens may be stored up to 7 days at 2-8°C or 3 days at 15-25°C. 

Note:5 µL is needed for prediluted step if the sample is in an abnormal size of tube or if there is less than 2.0 mL of sample in the tube.

Reference Values

HEMOGLOBIN A1C

4.2-5.6%:  Normal HbA1c

5.7-6.4%:  Increased risk for diabetes

≥ 6.5%:  Diagnostic for diabetes
