Test Code HCVAB Hepatitis C Virus (Anti-HCV) Antibody, LAB868

Performing Laboratory

St. Luke's Hospital Cedar Rapids

Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Gold-top serum gel tube or plain, red-top tube

Acceptable: Green-top (lithium heparin or sodium heparin) tube or lavender-top (EDTA) tube

Specimen Volume: 160 uL of serum or plasma

Stability: Store samples at 2 to 8°C if not tested immediately.  Store samples stoppered and upright at all times at 2 to 8°C up to 7 days.  Freeze samples, devoid of red blood cells, at or below -20°C for up to 180 days.  Thoroughly mix thawed samples and centrifuge at 10,000 g for 2 minutes before using.

Collection Instructions:

Note:  The performance of the assay has not been established for populations of immunocompromised, immunosuppressed, infants or children less than 18 months of age or with cord blood, neonatal specimens, cadaver specimens, heat-inactivated specimens, or body fluids other than serum or plasma such as saliva, urine, amniotic fluid, or pleural fluid.

Note: Heterophilic antibodies in human serum can react with reagent immunoglobulins, interfering with in vitro immunoassays. Patients routinely exposed to animals or to animal serum products can be prone to this interference and anomalous values may be observed. Additional information may be required for diagnosis.

Reference Values

Nonreactive

Samples with equivocal and reactive results with the index value between 1.00 and 11.00 will be sent to Mayo Medical Laboratories for confirmatory testing.  See C390S_HCV Algorithm for proper handling.  The confirmation order HCVRTM requires 1.5 mL of serum.  Place the order on the same accession number using the modifier OBL.  Take the properly labeled aliquot to the reference lab person or, if no one is available, store the aliquot in the reference lab freezer to be sent out.

Reactive results with the index of >11.00 do NOT need to be sent to Mayo Medical Laboratories for confirmatory testing.    Results will be transmitted to the Iowa Disease Surveillance System through the IDSS interface.

Useful For

The presence of antibodies to HCV indicates that an individual may have been infected with HCV or may be capable of transmitting HCV infection.
