Specimen Requirements


Preferred: Lavender-top (EDTA) tube

Acceptable: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube
Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL of EDTA or lithium heparin whole blood

Stability: Store samples at 2 to 8 °C for up to 5 days.

Collection Instructions: Avoid tubes with iodoacetate.

Useful in the detection of abnormal hemoglobins which is of major importance in the diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies in patients who exhibit a wide range of symptoms.
