Specimen Requirements


Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube

Acceptable: Gold-top serum gel tube or plain red-top tube
Specimen Volume: 0.1 mL of plasma or serum

Stability: Separated specimens should be analyzed within 24 hours or kept at 2 – 8°C

               and analyzed within 3 days. For longer storage, samples may be frozen at -20°C for

               several weeks or at -70°C for longer periods.

Collection Instructions: Fasting (12 hour preferred).


Reference Values

<130 mg/dL

The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) has set the following guidelines (reference values) for LDLC:

Optimal: <100 mg/dL

Low risk: 100-129 mg/dL

Borderline high: 130-159 mg/dL

High: 160-189 mg/dL

Very high: ≥190 mg/dL

Useful For

LDL Cholesterol measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of lipid disorders such as diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, and various liver and renal diseases.
