Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Gold-top serum gel tube or plain, red-top tube
Specimen Volume: 2.5 mL serum preferred, minimum 500 uL of serum required.

Stability: Specimens should be stored at 2° to 8°C if the test is to be run with 7 days of collection.  If testing is delayed more than 7 days, the specimen should be frozen (-20°C or colder).

Note: This assay has not been evaluated for newborn screening, cord blood specimens, or individuals less than 12 years of age.

Useful For

This test is to be used in cases of high risk blood and body fluid exposure on the sourve if HIV status is unknown.  Exceptions to this rule will only be made if the patient needs possible anti-viral medication.  STAT HIV Ag/Ab Combo assay on the Centaur (LAB5383 HIV 4th Gen Screen) should be offered as an alternative in cases not requireing anti-viral treatment.
