Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Specimens:

Ostomy, perirectal, or rectal sites

Note: No visible stool on swabs

 

Ostomy Site

1. Submit specimen using aerobic CultureSwab.

2. Collect specimen by gently rubbing the swab over stoma 5 times.

3. Place swab in transport media.

4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Note: Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.

 

Perirectal/Rectal

1. Submit specimen using aerobic CultureSwab.

2. Collect specimen by gently rubbing the swab over perirectal area 5 times.

3. Place swab in transport media.

4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Note: Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.

No VRE detected

Methodology

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)/DNA Extraction/PCR Amplification/Hybridization

Used for the detection of Enterococcus species that are vancomycin-resistant.

Note: If VRE is detected, infection control will be notified and inpatients will be isolated.
