Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube 

Acceptable: Gold-top serum gel tube, plain red-top tube, grey-top

                     (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube, or lavender-top (EDTA) tube

Specimen Volume: 0.2 mL of plasma or serum

Stability: Separated specimens should be analyzed immediately or kept at 2 – 8 °C

               for 24 hours.  Specimens separated from gel (SST or PST) may be frozen

               for longer term storage.

Note: 1. Specimens containing other tricyclics or drugs structurally related to tricyclic

              antidepressants or metabolites may show interference or cross reactivity.

 

Reference Values

Cutoff: >300 ng/mL

 

Depending on the specific tricyclic antidepressant medication patient is taking, the total therapeutic range is slightly different.

Useful For

Detection of the drug concentration in the plasma or serum of patients with suspected drug overdose is helpful in confirming the diagnosis and selecting the appropriate treatment.
