Specimen Requirements


Preferred: Urine from a 12-hour timed collection.

Specimen Volume: 0.1 mL from a 12-hour timed urine collection.

Stability: No preservative. Refrigerate specimen during collection, and send specimen refrigerated.

                Urine amylase is less stable and should be adjusted to an alkaline pH before

                storage at 2-8°C for up to 2 days or at -70°C for up to 2 weeks.

Collection Instructions: Obtain collection jug from laboratory.

Note: Starting and ending times of collection are required.

Useful For

The activity of α-amylase in serum, plasma, urine, or other body fluids is an important factor is the diagnosis of pancreatic disorders.  Amylase measurements are used primarily in the diagnosis and

treatment of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
