Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Gold-top serum gel tube or plain, red-top tube

Acceptable: Green-top( sodium or lithium heparin) tube (only if it is the only sample available)
Specimen Volume: 50 µL of serum

280-300 mOsm/kg

Useful For

Determination of serum and urine osmolality can be useful in the assessment of electrolyte and acid-base disorders, in the detection of unmeasured substances in the serum, and in the assessment of renal concentrating ability.
