Specimen Requirements


Preferred: Random Urine Collection

Acceptable:  24 hour collection

Specimen Volume: 1 mL from a random or 24 hour urine collection.

Stability: Specimens may be stored at 2-8° C for up to one week.  Do not freeze.

Collection Instructions: Samples containing amikacin, gentamicin, kanamycin, and tobramycin should be avoided since these substances falsely increase urine protein results.

Useful For

Urine creatinine measurements are used to assess kidney function and in the diagnosis and treatment of renal disease.  Protein measurements in urine are used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease conditions such as renal disease, heart disease, or thyroid disorders, which are characterized by proteinuria or albuminuria.
