Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Pink-top (EDTA) tube

Acceptable: Lavender-top (EDTA) tube or cord blood

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL of EDTA whole blood

Stability: An EDTA, specimen drawn within 3 days of testing is the preferred specimen. 

              The sample should be tested as soon as possible following collection.  If a delay in

               testing occurs, the sample should be stored 2-6 C.

Useful For

The ABO incompatibility test is useful in determining if a baby's positive DAT is due to a blood type incompatibility between the mother and the baby or if it is due to an antibody that the mother possesses.
