Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube

Acceptable: Gold-top serum gel tube or plain red-top tube

Specimen Volume: 2.3 µL of sample plus dead volume

Stability: Samples should be separated as soon as possible to prevent falsely lowered calcium levels. Specimens may be kept at 2 – 8°C for 3 weeks.  For longer storage, samples may be frozen at -20°C for up to 8 months.
