Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube

Acceptable: Gold-top serum gel tube, plain red-top tube, EDTA plasma

Minimum Specimen Volume: 1.1 µL  plus dead volume

Stability: Kept at 15‑25 °C at or at 2 – 8°C and analyzed within 7 days. For longer storage, samples may be frozen at -20°C for up to 3 months.  Avoid repeated freezing and thawing.

<200mg/dL

The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) has set the following guidelines (reference values) for cholesterol:

Desirable: <200 mg/dL

Borderline: 200-239 mg/dL

High: ≥240 mg/dL
