Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube:
Preferred: Heparinized Dark Green tube, whole blood
Acceptable: Heparinized syringe, whole blood
Cadaver blood also may be used for analysis.
Specimen Volume: 150 uL lithium heparin whole blood
Stability: Preferred temperature is ambient, but Carboxyhemoglobin is stable in a refrigerated stored blood sample for up to 4 weeks.
Reference Values
Nonsmokers: 0.5-3.0%
Smokers: 1.5-9.0%
Critical value: >20%
Results ≥10% are reported to the Iowa Disease Surveillance System
