Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube

Preferred:  Lavender-top (EDTA) tube
Specimen Volume: 2 mL (minimum volume: 1 mL) of EDTA whole blood
Stability:  24 hours at room temperature and up to 36 hours refrigerated

Reference Values

1-6 years: 0.05 - 0.45 eosinophils th/mm3

≥7 years: 0.05 - 0.30 eosinophils th/mm3

Useful For

A low eosinophil count (eosinopenia) will be found in hyperadrenalism (Cushing's disease), shock and following administration of ACTH.  Increased numbers of eosinophils (eosinophilia) occur in allergic reactions, parasitic infections, brucellosis and certain leukemias.
