Specimen Requirements


Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube

Acceptable: Gold-top serum gel tube, plain red-top tube, or  lavender-top (EDTA) tube

                      -Hemolyzed specimen or sodium heparin tube is not acceptable.
Specimen Volume: 0.1 mL of plasma or serum

Stability: Serum or plasma should be physically separarated from cells as soon as possible with a maximum limit of two hours from the time of collection.  Store specimens at 2 – 8 °C and analyzed within 7 days. For longer storage, samples may be frozen at -20 °C for up to 6 months.

Note: 1. Human anti-mouse antibodies or other heterophile antibodies may be present in patient specimens. This assay has been specially formulated to minimize the effects of these antibodies, however results from patients known to have these antibodies should be carefully evaluated.

2.  This assay is affected by biotin interference.


Reference Values

Males: 26-388 ng/mL

Females: 8-252 ng/mL

Useful For

Serum ferritin levels may serve as a tool to monitor the effects of iron therapy, but results should be interpreted with caution, as ferritin levels in these cases may not always reflect the true state of iron stores.
