Test Code FLLDH Lactate Dehydrogenase, Body Fluid, LAB188
Performing Laboratory
St. Luke's Hospital Cedar Rapids
Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube:
Preferred: Pleural, peritoneal (ascites, pancreatic), pericardial and synovial fluid
Acceptable: Other fluid types including CSF should be approved by the supervisor
or pathologist before reporting.

Stability: Separated specimens should be analyzed immediately or kept at room temperature
for up to 3 days. Do not refrigerate or freeze.
Note: 1. Indicate specimen source on specimen
container and in computer.
2. A serum specimen should also be submitted, unless 1 has been previously
submitted for other testing.
Reference Values
No established reference values
Note: LD activity in fluids from areas near
or adjacent to malignancies is often higher than serum LD, whereas
the opposite is true for fluids bathing healthy tissues.
Day(s) Test Set Up
Monday through Sunday
Useful For
Elevated serum levels of LDH have been observed in a variety of disease states. The highest levels are seen in patients with megaloblastic anemia, disseminated carcinoma and shock. Moderate increases occur in muscular disorders, nephrotic syndrome and cirrhosis. Mild increases in LDH activity have been reported in cases of myocardial or pulmonary infarction, leukemia, hemolytic anemia and non-viral hepatitis.
Methodology
Rate Reaction, IFCC-standardized
Reflex Information:
When #FLDH Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH), Body Fluid is ordered (other than spinal fluid), a #LDH Lactate Dehydrogenase (LD), Plasma or Serum will also be done and the ratio calculated.
