Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube:
Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube
Acceptable: Gold-top serum gel tube, plain red-top tube, or EDTA plasma
Specimen Volume: A minimum volume of 2.3 uL plus a dead volume
Stability: Separated specimens should be analyzed immediately or kept at 2 – 25°C
and analyzed within 7 days. For longer storage, samples may be frozen
at -20°C for up to 1 year.

Females: 5-36 U/L

Useful For
Gamma-glutamyltransferase measurement is principally used to diagnose and monitor hepatobiliary disease. It is a sensitive enzymatic indicator of liver disease with normal values rarely found in the presence of hepatic disease. GGT is also used as a sensitive screening test for occult alcoholism.
