Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred:  Gold-top serum gel tube or plain, red top tube

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL serum

Stability: Samples may be stored at 2-8°C for up to 8 days, but for prolonged storage they

               should be kept frozen at -20°C or below.  Repeated freeze/thaw cycles

               should be avoided.

Collection Instructions: Serum should be separated from cells as soon as possible.  Serum tubes should be allowed to completely clot before centrifugation. 

Reject Due To: 

Hemolysis:  Mild reject; Gross reject

Lipemia:  Mild OK; Gross reject

Icterus:  Mild OK; Gross OK

Useful For

Measurement of Haptoglobin levels can be useful in the following:

Low levels of haptoglobin are associated with hemolytic anemias and liver disease. 

Very high levels can develop in response to inflammatory conditions.
