Specimen Requirements


Preferred: Gold-top serum gel tube or plain, red-top tube

Acceptable:  Lavender-top EDTA plasma, green-top sodium heparin or lithium heparin

Specimen: 2.5 mL serum or 500 uL of serum minimum

Stability: Store samples at 2° to 8°C if not tested within 24 hours of collection.  Store samples stoppered and upright at all times at 2° to 8°C up to 14 days. Freeze samples, devoid of red blood cells, at or below -20°C for up to 8 months.  Thoroughly mix thawed samples and centrifuge at 10,000 x g for 2 min before using.

Collection Instructions:

Note: HIV Confirmation testing requires serum only.  Ideally, all HIV testing should be performed on serum.

Useful For

The primary purpose of the HIV 1/2 antibody assay is to aid in the diagnosis of HIV infection and AIDS on pediatric (2 years of age) and adult populations. 


Specimens that are initially reactive will be reported as Indeterminate and reflex to the Mayo confirmatory tests LAB4377, HIV-1 & HIV-2 Ab Differentitation.
