Important Note

Required Information:

Answers to the following questions are needed for pap processing and reflexive testing:

1.     Perform HPV regardless of result?

2.     Perform HPV if ASCUS?

3.     HPV if any abnormality?

Patient information required for pap interpretation:

1.     Date of last menstrual period

2.     Date of colleciton

3.     Indication of previous abnormal report

Specimen Requirements

Acceptable specimens:

 

1.     Obtain the SurePath Preservative Fluid (pap container) from the laboratory.

2.     Collect adequate pap specimen. Most cervical carcinomas and pre-cancerous conditions occur in the

         transformation zone (squamo-columnar junction); therefore, this area needs to be sampled if optimum

         results are to be obtained. Place colleciton device immediately into the SurePath vial.

3.     Break off the collection device handle, keeping the device in the SurePath vial.

4.     Label specimen with a least two unique identifiers: Patient's name and Medical Record Number or

        Date of Birth.

5.     Store at room temperature. Cytology testing must be completed within 28 days of the collection date.

Reference Values

Negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy.

Methodology

Liquid based pap specimen processed on the BD PrepMate and BD PrepStain, producing a slide that is

examined microscopically first on the BD FocalPoint, then manually by the cytotech.
