Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube:
Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube
Acceptable: Gold-top serum gel tube, plain red-top tube, EDTA plasma
Specimen Volume: A minimum volume of 1.1 µL plus a dead volume is required for testing.
Stability: Separated specimens are stable for 7 days at 2 – 8°C. For longer storage, samples may be frozen at -20°C for 1 year.
Collection Instructions: Fasting (12 hour preferred).
Reference Values
≤100 mg/dL
The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) has set the following guidelines (reference values) for LDLC:
Optimal: <100 mg/dL
Low risk: 100-129 mg/dL
Borderline high: 130-159 mg/dL
High: 160-189 mg/dL
Very high: ≥190 mg/dL
