Performing Laboratory

St. Luke's Hospital Cedar Rapids (with films to State Hygienic Laboratory)

Specimen Requirements

EDTA (lavender-top) whole blood.  Must be received in laboratory within 1 hour of collection.  If not, two thick and two thin films should be made and transported to the lab with the EDTA tube.

Note: It is recommended blood be collected at 6 to 8 hour intervals over a 24-hour period.

Monday through Sunday. 

 

The rapid test is performed 24/7 at St. Luke's Laboratory.  Films are sent to the State Hygienic Laboratory for processing.  State Hygienic Laboratory performs testing Monday to Friday 0800 - 1700.

Rapid Test (St. Luke's):  BinaxNOW Malaria Test  (immunochromatographic membrane assay)

 

Slides (SHL):  Giemsa Stain of thick and thin blood fims/Microscopic

Test Classification and CPT Coding

87899 - Rapid Test (performed at St. Luke's Hospital Laboratory)

87207 - Blood smear for parasites (performed at SHL)
