Specimen Requirements


Preferred: Pink-top (EDTA) Tube

Acceptable: Lavender-top (EDTA) tube

Specimen Volume: 3 mL of EDTA whole blood
Stability: The sample should be tested as soon as possible following collection.  If a delay

                 in testing occurs, the sample should be stored 2-6 C.   

Collection Instructions: For women that are Rh negative and have delivered an Rh positive infant,

                                         collect specimen within 24 hours post delivery.
Note: Not indicated if baby known to be Rh negative.

Useful For

A postpartum screening test (rosette test) for fetomaternal hemorrhage that is used to determine the amount of Rh Immune Globulin (RhIG) to be given to Rh negative mothers after birth to prevent Rh hemolytic disease of the newborn.
