Specimen Requirements

1. Contact microbiology laboratory for instructions on specimen collection and to obtain special collection bottles.
2. 20 mL (10 mL in aerobic bottle and 10 mL in anaerobic bottle) of whole blood drawn from line following stoppage of IV (no waste is drawn).
3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Note: 1. To avoid contamination, blood culture collection protocol must be followed.
2. Indicate specimen source/port on specimen container and in computer.

Critical value: all positives

 

If blood culture is positive, PCR is performed, if appropriate.

Methodology

Fluorometric Detection of CO2

CO2 indicates growth in broth culture bottle.

Note: This test is performed if physician is concerned that a central venous line is colonized or infected.
