Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: CSF fluid obtained from a spinal tap

Specimen Volume: 0.1 mL of spinal fluid in a screw-capped, sterile, vial.

Stability: Remaining cerebrospinal fluid specimens should be refrigerated or frozen.

Note: Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Reference Values

0-10 years: 60-80 mg/dL

>10 years: 40-70 mg/dL

Useful For

CSF glucose is altered by certain disease processes.  In bacterial meningitis, CSF glucose levels may be depressed to strikingly low values.  In viral meningitis glucose usually remains in the normal range.
