Important Note

This test code is used to detect multiple organisms in CSF by PCR.  All organisms listed are run as part of this panel.

If bacteria meningitis is suspected, a Culture CSF, LAB 268, needs to be ordered in conjunction with this test.

If only viral meningitis is suspected, a culture need not be ordered.

Specimen Requirements

Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF), collected via Lumbar Puncture.

1.  Submit CSF in sterile vial, a minimum of 0.5 mL is needed for testing.

2.  Maintain sterility and transport immediately to lab.

3.  May be transported at room temperature if the specimen will be received in the lab within 24 hours.

     Refrigerate at 2-8 C if there will be a delay.

Note: Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.

Useful For

Rapid diagnosis of the most common agents of Meningitis and Encephalitis.

Methodology

Multiplex PCR for the detection of the following common agents of meningitis/encephalitis:

Bacteria: E. coli K1, Haemophilus influenzae, Listeria monocytogenes, Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococus agalactiae (Group B), and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Viruses: Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Enterovirus, Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2), Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), Human parechovirus, and Vericella zoster virus (VZV).

Fungi: Cryptococcus neoformans/gattii.
