Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube:
Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube
Acceptable: Gold-top serum gel tube, plain red-top tube, EDTA plasma (EDTA plasma values are approximately 7% lower than serum values)
Specimen Volume: A minimum volume of 2.3 µL plus a dead volume of plasma or serum
Stability:Separate specimens within two hours of collection and analyze immediately.
Stability in serum or plasma is 3 days at 20-25 ⁰C, 7 days at 4-8 ⁰C, or 6 months at -20 ⁰C.
Reference Values
Males: 3.4-7.0 mg/dL
Females: 2.4-5.7 mg/dL

Useful For
Uric acid is a waste product, derived from purines in the diet and those synthesized in the body. The healthy adult human body contains about 1.1 g of uric acid and about one sixth of this is present in the blood with the remainder being in other tissues. The blood uric acid level reflects the balance between uric acid production and excretion.
