Test Code WBLA Lactic Acid, Venous, Whole Blood, LAB730

Important Note

  In the following scenarios the WBLA testing will be performed:

1.

Sepsis order sets used in the Emergency Department.

2.

In Code Blue or MET calls when formerly a lactic acid was performed by ISTAT.

3.

In cases when the gray top needed for the Roche lactic acid was not drawn.  Note: The Radiometer ABL needs to be performed within 30 minutes.

4.

The patient has ABGS, VBG or MOST ordered concurrently with the lactic acid which will save the patient from having more blood drawn and streamline the processing.

Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: heparinized syringe

Acceptable: Green-top (heparin) tube

Specimen Volume: 65 uL of heparinized whole blood

Stability: Specimens should be analyzed within 30 minutes of collection

 

Reference Values

0.4 – 2.0 mmol/L

 

Critical Value:  ≥4.0 mmol/L
