Important Note

Cortisol Baseline must also be ordered as a part of this test.  To perform a 30-minute stimulation test, order a baseline cortisol and also order the 30-minute stimulation test.

If both 30 and 60 minute levels are to be done, order one baseline, one 30-minute, and one 60-minute test.

If the test requested is for a cortisol only, order the cortisol a.m. or cortisol p.m. tests, as applicable.

This test is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women.

Specimen Requirements

Cortrosyn is available from the pharmacy or Omnicell.

Baseline - REQUIRED (30-minute post dose specimen must also be submitted.)

 

Baseline

Submit specimen according to guidelines in procedure "Cortisol Stimulation Baseline, LAB2385)

 

30-Minute Post Dose

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

 

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube

Acceptable: Gold-top serum gel tube or Plain Red-top serum tube, EDTA lavender plasma
Specimen: 170 uL of plasma or serum

Stability: Due to possible evaporation effects, samples and calibrators on the analyzers should be analyzed/measured within 2 hours. Stable for 24 hours at 20‑25 °C, 4 days at 2‑8 °C, 12 months at ‑20 °C (± 5 °C). Freeze only once.

Collection Instructions: Draw post dose specimen 30 minutes after a 0.25 mg dose of Cortrosyn is injected IM.

Note: Label specimen appropriately (30 minutes post Cortrosyn injection).
