Useful For
Renal epithelial cells containing granules of hemosiderin occasionally may be seen in the urinary sediment. Hemosiderin is a form of iron, formed by renal tubular epithelial cells from hemoglobin present in the renal tubules. The presence of hemosiderin in the urine sediment 2 to 3 days after an acute hemolytic episode indicates severe intravascular hemolysis. It is commonly seen in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria and may be seen as the result of hemochromatosis.
