Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube:
Preferred: Pleural, peritoneal (ascites, pancreatic), pericardial, synovial fluid and amniotic fluid
Acceptable: Other fluid types should be approved by the supervisor or pathologist before reporting.
Specimen Volume: 0.1 mL of body fluid
Stability: Separated specimens are stable for as long as 8 hours at 25°C and up to 72 hours at 4°C.
Note: Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.

Useful For
Pleural fluid glucose concentrations are similar to plasma glucose levels in normal fluids and transudate. Glucose is decreased in exudates, as may be caused by bacterial infection, tuberculosis, neoplasia, and rheumatoid disease.
