Specimen Requirements

Collect specimen as follows:

Body Hair
1. Submit body hair in a screw-capped, sterile container with 70% ethanol.

2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature.

Note: Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.

Skin Scrapings
1. Scrape the skin from the leading edge of the lesion with a scalpel containing a drop of mineral oil.  The mineral oil enhances the adherence of the mites to the blade.

2. Add an additional drop of mineral oil to a clean slide and place scraping on the slide, coverslip, and send in a slide transport.

3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature.
