Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Heparinized syringe, arterial, venous, or mixed venous (drawn by nursing personnel to calibrate

              the patient’s Swan-Ganz line) blood.

Acceptable: Dark Green tube, arterial, venous, or mixed venous (drawn by nursing personnel to calibrate 

              the patient’s Swan-Ganz line) blood.
Specimen Volume: 150 uL of heparinized whole blood

Stability: If immediate analysis is not possible the sample can be stored in ice water or in the refrigerator for

              up to 2 hours.

Reference Values

Arterial:  94-98%

Venous:  70-80%

Capillary:  94-98%

Useful For

Measured O2 saturation is required by nursing staff to calibrate a patient’s Swan-Ganz line.  O2 saturation levels are normally calculated from the measured parameters of pH and pO2.
