Important Note

Note: In order for this test to be accurate, specimen must be collected from perianal area in early-morning, before patient leaves bed and before bathing or going to the bathroom.

Specimen Requirements

Pinworm paddle, is preferred method of collection. (Obtain collector from microbiology laboratory.)

a.  Hold the paddle by cap and remove from tube.

b   Using gentle pressure, press the sticky side of paddle against skin around rectum (perianal folds)       3 or 4 times.

b.  Place paddle back into collector tube and tighten the lid.

c.  Label tube with patient's name, date and time of collection.

Scotch Tape Prep is accepted (must use transparent tape, not frosted).

a.  Take a 3 inch piece of clear tape.  Loop the tape, sticky side out, over the end of a wooden tongue depressor.  DO NOT use Magic transparent tape. 

b.  Press sticky surface against several areas (folds) of the perianal region.

c.  Place tape, sticky side down onto the surface of a glass slide.  Detach the tape from the tongue depressor.  Smooth tape onto slide with cotton or gauze.

d.  Label slide with patient's name, date and time of collection. 

e.  Place in slide holder for transport.

Reference Values

Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) adults present, Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) eggs present.

No Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) found.
