Important Note

This test is only used for rapid RSV antigen testing on nasopharyngeal specimens collected at off-site clinics.  Not to be ordered at the St. Luke's Hospital location.  See FLURSV.  This testing is only approved for patients under the age of 7.  Any requests for this test on patients 7 and older cannot be performed by this method.  Recommend testing using Respiratory Virus Antigens Panel, LAB1307, if patient is 7 and older.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Preferred:

 Dry Nasopharyngeal Swab

1. Submit a sterile, dry nasopharyngeal swab. Collection kits are available from the lab upon request.  NOTE: Calcium alginate swabs are not acceptable.

2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly. 

Note: Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.

 

Alternate:

Nasal Washing or Nasal Aspirate

1. Submit 2 mL to 3 mL of nasal washing or nasal aspirate in a screw-capped, sterile container.

2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
