Test Code SCRECP Carbapenemase Resistant Gene by PCR, LAB953

Important Note

Performed on rectal swab specimens from patients who are at risk for intestinal colonization with carbapenem-nonsusceptible bacteria.

Performing Laboratory

St. Luke's Hospital Cedar Rapids

Specimen Requirements

BBL Culture Swab Collection and Transport System

Collection Instructions:

1. Collect a pair of rectal swabs by inserting both swab tips approximately 1 cm beyond the anal sphincter and rotate gently.

2. Place swab pair back into the original transport tube.

3. Swabs in the transport tube can be stored at 15-28°C for up to five days.

Note: Detection of blaKPC, blaNDM, blaVIM, blaOXA-48, and blaIMP gene sequences is dependent on the number of organisms present in the sample. Reliable results are dependent on proper sample handling and storage.

Methodology

Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

A negative result can not rule-out new or unknown variants of the five target genes tested.

Testing with the SCRECP assay should be used as an adjunct to other available methods.

Test Classification and CPT coding

87798-Rectal Swab detection of carbapenem- nonsusceptible bacteria

Reference Ranges

Not Detected (For all targets)

Day(s) Test Set Up

Monday thru Sunday; continuously

Report Available

1 hr from receipt of specimen.

Tests included in this Panel

The SCRECP panel allows for the detection of 5 gene sequences (blaKPC, blaNDM, blaVIM, blaOXA-48, and blaIMP) associated with carbapenem-nonsusceptiblity in gram negative bacteria.

Note: The detection of blaKPC, blaNDM, blaVIM, blaOXA-48, and blaIMP from rectal specimens may be from organisms other than Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii.
