Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: CSF fluid obtained from a spinal tap

Sample Volume: 0.1 mL of spinal fluid in a screw-capped, sterile, vial.

Stability: Specimens should be centrifuged within 15 minutes and analyzed within 8 hours

               of collection when kept refrigerated or at room temperature. 

Note: Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Useful For

Lactate levels in CSF are increased in bacterial meningitis, hypocapnia, hydrocephalus, brain abscesses, cerebral ischemia and any clinical condition associated with reduced oxygenation of the brain and/or increased intracranial pressure.
