Primary test for current infection of Treponema Pallidum (syphilis).

Specimen Requirements

Container/tube:

Preferred:  Gold SST serum may be stored for up to 7 days at 20-25 °C, 14 days at  2-8 °C and 12 months at -15 to -25 °C.

Acceptable:  Red top serum, mint green top Li-heparin, dark green top Na-heparin, lavender top EDTA, yellow top CPDA, and blue top Na-citrate.  Plasma, while acceptable, not preferred due to reflex testing for positive results.

Specimen volume:  1 mL

 

Note:  Specimens with gross lipemia or hemolysis will be rejected.

Reference Values

Nonreactive

Reactive results will reflex to RPR testing. 

If treponema antibody and RPR results are discordent and no history of previous TPPA testing, specimen will be forwarded to Mayo for TPPA testing.
