Specimen Requirements

For situations where chain-of-custody is required, a complete chain-of-custody protocol must be maintained when collecting and handling specimens. Specimens must be kept in locked storage until they can be delivered to the laboratory.

 

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Cord cup (obtain from laboratory)

Specimen Volume: 6 inch to 8 inch segment of umbilical cord drained of cord blood and rinsed with normal saline.

Stability: Refrigerate

Collection Instructions: A completed Chain-of-Custody Form is required when processing a chain-of-custody specimen.  Refer to http://www.usdtl.com/collection/procedures.

Useful For

The umbilical cord drug screen is intended to be used in potentially high risk cases to identify infants who have been exposed to drugs and may require medical intervention.

Methodology

Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and Confirmed by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)

Includes testing for amphetamines, barbiturate, benzodiazepine, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and propoxyphene.
