Specimen Requirements
15 mL (minimum volume: 2 mL) from a first-morning urine collection is preferable, but testing can be performed on a random urine collection. Forward promptly. Specimen stability is 1 hour at ambient temperature. If there is a delay in transport of ≤24 hours or if mailing time is ≤24 hours, send specimen refrigerated. Specimen should have no additive.
Reference Values
WBC: 0-10/HPF
RBC: 0-2/HPF
Squamous epithelial cells: 0-5/LPF
Hyaline casts: 0-2/LPF
Reflex Testing
If original order is for reflex to culture, culture will be initiated if >10 WBC/HPF
