Urinary sodium can be diagnostically useful in helping to determine the route of sodium loss. A low urine sodium concentration (<10 mEq/L) indicates extrarenal sodium loss, whereas the presence of high concentration of sodium indicates renal salt wasting or adrenal insufficiency.
