Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Random Urine Collection

Acceptable:  24 hour collection

Specimen Volume: A minimum volume of 4.5 µL plus a dead volume from a random or 24 hour urine collection.

Stability: Urine specimens are stable at 20-25 ⁰C for 1 day, 7 days at 4-8 ⁰C, or 1 month at -20 ⁰C.

Useful For

Urine creatinine measurements are used to assess kidney function and in the diagnosis and treatment of renal disease.  Protein measurements in urine are used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease conditions such as renal disease, heart disease, or thyroid disorders, which are characterized by proteinuria or albuminuria.
