Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: 1mL body fluid in EDTA (Lavender Tube).

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL body fluid in EDTA or sterile vial

Stability: Mix specimen well by inversion. Cell count should be performed promptly.

Note: Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.

Useful For

WBC concentration can aid in the diagnosis of intra-amniotic infection.

 

Leukocyte counts have been used to distinguish transudates from exudates, with transudates generally having WBC <1000/cumm and exudates generally >1000/cumm.
