Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube 

Acceptable:  Gold-top serum gel tube, plain red-top tube, or lavender-top (EDTA) tube

Specimen Volume: 0.1 mL of plasma or serum

Stability: Samples can be kept at 2 – 8°C for 5 days. For longer storage, samples may be frozen

                at -20°C for up to 3 months.

Collection Instructions: Bilirubin is photosensitive. Specimen must be protected from light.  Primary tubes acceptable if the test label covers the majority of the tube for transport.  If aliquoted, place in amber vial or protect from light.
