Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) tube

Acceptable: Gold-top serum gel tube, plain red-top tube, EDTA plasma

Minimum Specimen Volume:  4.5 µL plus a dead volume

Stability: Specimens may be stored at 15-25 °C for 11 days, 2 – 8°C for 2 months. Samples should be separated within 2 hrs of being collected. For longer storage, samples may be frozen at -20°C for up to 3 years.

Reference Values

Low risk for cardiac disease: 0.0-0.9 mg/L

Average risk for cardiac disease: 1.0-3.0 mg/L

High risk for cardiac disease: >3.0 mg/L

High sensitivity CRP measurements may be used for evaluation of conditions thought to be associated with inflammation, in otherwise healthy individuals and as an independent risk marker for the identification and stratification of individuals at risk for future cardiovascular disease.
